Protein and eating
Hit your protein target when a GLP-1 shrinks your appetite. Targets come from published guidance and nutrition labels, with the arithmetic shown so you can run your own numbers.
- GLP-1 nausea: how to still get your protein in
GLP-1 nausea is the most common side effect, reported by 25% to 44% of adults in weight-loss trials, mostly during dose increases (FDA labels). If you can keep food down, eat 10 to 17 g of protein from cold, low-fat foods every 3 to 4 hours. If you cannot keep fluids down, call your prescriber.
- How much protein should you eat on a GLP-1?
A 2025 advisory from four US nutrition and obesity societies says targets of 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram a day have been proposed during active weight loss, or a flat 80 to 120 grams. If you have kidney disease, your kidney team sets your number; otherwise use that range and split it across meals.
